Step 1:
Thoroughly wash, clean and slice the tomatoes. Cut the bread into slices. Lightly grease a baking dish and alternate layers of tomatoes and slices of bread. Preheat the oven to 200°C top/bottom heat.
Step 2:
Whisk the crème fraîche, milk and eggs in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread casserole. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until the egg is set.
Step 3:
Wash the basil, shake dry and chop finely. After baking, sprinkle over the finished casserole and serve.
