What is a low carb diet?

A common question when it comes to low carb diets is, "How many carbohydrates does a low carb diet contain?" Since there is no official definition for a low carbohydrate or low carb diet, this means that there is no standardization for how many carbohydrates a low carbohydrate diet must have. Usually, diets that restrict you or require you to count carbohydrates are called low-carb diets. It usually refers to a high intake of protein, fat and healthy vegetables.

Current dietary guidelines suggest that we eat 40 to 60 percent of our total daily calories from carbohydrates. So if you were eating 2000 calories per day, you would be eating 200 to 300 grams of carbohydrates per day to meet that guideline. So, simply, anything less than that could be considered a low-carb diet.

In general, a low-carb diet is one that contains 20-70 grams of carbohydrates per day. Some diets are very low in carbohydrates, as is the ketogenic diet. On this diet, you eat most of your calories from fat and the rest from protein and carbohydrates. The keto diet, as it is commonly referred to, is sometimes prescribed by doctors to help control seizure disorders, but some dieters consider it an effective weight loss tool.

Origin of Low Carb

The low carb diet was first developed in the 1950s by Dr. Alfred W. Pennington, who had the idea that eating carbohydrates could contribute to causing overweight and obesity. The idea of low carb diets was popularized in the 1970s by Dr. Robert Atkins, who published a low carb diet that aimed to limit the consumption of carbohydrates and instead eat more proteins and fats. Since then, many different low carb diets have evolved, varying in their recommendations for carbohydrate consumption.
