Turmeric is a superfood that is becoming increasingly popular in our country for its energizing and cleansing properties, which are also appreciated in Ayurvedic cuisine. The root, which is related to ginger, looks very similar to freshly purchased ginger, except that the inside of the turmeric root is much more yellow. Because of its cleansing effect, turmeric plays an important role in Ayurvedic teachings and is also used as a remedy in traditional Chinese medicine.


Turmeric is not only considered a beauty elixir and antioxidant, but is also said to help with joint pain and stiffness due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, turmeric helps with flatulence after high-fat meals, as it stimulates the metabolism. The yellow spice intensely colors dishes yellow and gives them a unique flavor with its slightly earthy-bitter and pungent taste.


Turmeric is used in many classic dishes, especially in Indian cuisine, such as curries, pancakes and vegetable side dishes like fried eggplant. It is also popular in beverages such as the Ayurvedic healing drink Golden Milk and can be used to enhance Italian pasta dough or Moroccan dishes.


Turmeric has fantastic applications in both medicine and cooking, as it is a traditional medicinal and spice plant that has protective and cell-protective effects. It strengthens the immune system, aids digestion and can be used as fresh turmeric root, ground turmeric powder or as a paste. Fresh turmeric is slightly spicy to bitter, turmeric powder is milder and is part of every curry mixture in Indian cuisine.


Here you will find various recipes with turmeric, because the plant is a versatile all-rounder. Turmeric can be used in drinks like Golden Milk or Coriander Turmeric Smoothie and in main dishes like Turmeric Cauliflower Millet Curry or warming soups like Golden Miso Soup. It can also be used in side dishes like turmeric fried rice or a delicious pumpkin salad with turmeric dressing.


It is recommended to combine turmeric with a pinch of black pepper to increase the body's absorption of the healthy pigment curcumin. Turmeric can also be combined excellently with ginger, as both belong to the same plant family. Classic baked goods and sweet desserts can also be enhanced with turmeric, for example a golden yeast plait with chocolate filling or a blueberry turmeric cake. Golden milk is also excellent prepared as ice cream and refined with coconut or almond brittle.


Turmeric powder contains the most important active ingredients, whose bioavailability is increased by the combination with black pepper, so that they can be better absorbed by the body. However, the fresh turmeric root is particularly healthy and aromatic.


Care should be taken when processing fresh turmeric, as it permanently colors vessels and kitchen utensils made of plastic or wood yellow. It is therefore advisable to use metal utensils and vessels made of glass or porcelain, and to rinse used dishes thoroughly before putting them in the dishwasher.


Turmeric tastes particularly good in hot drinks such as turmeric milk or turmeric tea and is beneficial to health even in small quantities. It is advisable to add the Indian spice to dishes more often in small amounts so that the intense turmeric flavor remains subtle. Some recipes with turmeric are cauliflower potato curry, vegetable curry in coconut milk, curry balls with mango chutney, Moroccan chicken, oriental lamb shoulder and many more.
