Leeks are a versatile and tasty vegetable that are in season from late August through April and can be used in many dishes. Leeks, also known as leeks, are multi-talented, adding depth and flavor to soups, quiches, casseroles and stir-fries. Don't let its unassuming exterior fool you, however, because leeks can be a bit tricky to prepare. Because the leaves are often sandy, they need to be washed thoroughly before use. To do this, cut off the white end and the dark green leaves, slice the leeks lengthwise and fan them under running water.
After washing, the preparation possibilities are endless. Cut the leeks into small pieces and sauté them or add them to soups, curries or risottos. For a delicious quiche or casserole filling, sauté the leeks and bake in the oven. To gratinate, precook the leeks in boiling salted water, rinse and top with sauce and cooked ham. You can also sauté sliced leeks in melted butter, deglaze with broth and cook to a simple side dish.
Leeks go well with carrots, potatoes, broccoli, squash, ham, pasta, rice, eggs, meat, fish or cream. It tastes slightly hot and spicy, but milder than onions, with a slightly sweet note after sautéing. Leeks are rich in nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin K and folic acid. Although available year-round, winter leeks are especially nutritious, making them an excellent winter vegetable. The cold season shouldn't stop you from enjoying leeks, though. Try it in refreshing summer dishes like a delicate cream of leek soup or teriyaki duck breast with pickled leeks and ginger.
Leeks are not only healthy, but also delicious and easy to prepare. Whether steamed or in various recipes such as leek tomato gratin, broccoli leek vegetables or pasta sauce with leeks, there is a leek dish for every occasion. Leeks can be used as the main ingredient or as a side dish, but always bring their unique flavor and texture to the table.
Try lentils with leeks, a leek quiche or a leek soup. Leeks are especially popular when combined with potatoes. Summer, fall or winter - leeks will always find a use in your kitchen. Get inspired by our collection of leek recipes and enjoy the taste and health benefits of leeks on your plate.
